Tax.cal

Privacy

What we store, and what we don't.

Short version: the figures you type into the calculator on this website stay on your device; we only count page visits. The Plus questionnaire stores nothing unless you press Save, and even then it holds no name, no email and no password, only your answers behind a private link you can delete yourself. The Tax.cal app in ChatGPT sends the figures you give it to our calculation service to work out the answer, and does not keep them.

The calculator on this website

Nothing leaves your device

Your salary, your spending and every figure on the results page are calculated in your browser using JavaScript that ships with the page. None of it is transmitted to us or to anyone else. Close the tab and it is gone.

The only thing kept on your device is your light/dark theme preference, in your browser's own storage. It never reaches us.

Tax.cal Plus

Only if you choose to save

While you answer the questions, everything stays on your device. If you press Save my review on the results page, we store:

  • Your answers to the questionnaire
  • The country, region, gross salary and marginal rate the review was based on
  • A snapshot of the findings you were shown
  • The date it was created and the date it expires

We deliberately do not store your name, your email address, a password, or your IP address. There is no account to create, because a saved review is reached only through its private link. That link contains a secret that we keep only as a one-way hash — meaning even we cannot reconstruct your link, and if our database were ever exposed, the records in it could not be opened or traced to a person.

Treat the link like a password. Anyone who has it can open that review.

Deleting it

You do not have to ask us

Open your saved review and press Delete it permanently. The record is removed immediately and the link stops working. There is no soft delete and no copy kept.

If you do nothing, a saved review deletes itself one year after you save it. We would rather old data disappear on its own than accumulate.

If you have lost your link, we genuinely cannot help you recover it or delete that specific review — we have no way to identify which record is yours. That is the deliberate cost of not holding your identity. It will expire on its own.

Tax.cal in ChatGPT

Sent to calculate, not kept

The ChatGPT app works differently from the calculator on this website, so "nothing leaves your device" does not apply to it. For the ChatGPT integration, your tax inputs are sent to Tax.cal's calculation service to perform the requested calculation. Tax.cal does not retain those inputs for ordinary calculation requests.

ChatGPT passes the service only the figures it needs for your question: for example the country, your salary, a US filing status and state, India's regime and deductions, or your monthly spending. The service works out the answer, sends it back and forgets it:

  • There is no database and no account. Nothing you send is saved.
  • Your salary, spending, deductions and other figures are never written to our logs. Each request leaves one line of operational facts so we can keep the service running and count usage: which tool ran, the country code, whether it worked, the type of any error, and how long it took.
  • The network address a request comes from (for ChatGPT, OpenAI's servers) is used only to limit floods of requests, and is not stored by us.
  • ChatGPT may attach technical details to a request, such as language settings. The service does not use, log or store them.

Your conversation itself, meaning what you type in ChatGPT and its replies, is handled by OpenAI under OpenAI's privacy policy. Tax.cal only receives the inputs ChatGPT passes to its tools. The service runs on Cloudflare, which processes each request in transit like any hosting provider.

The waiting list

Your email, if you give it

If you join the early-access list, we store the email address you typed and the country selected in the calculator, so we know which markets people are writing in from. That is handled by Formspree, which processes the submission and forwards it to us.

We use it to tell you when Tax.cal Plus opens. We do not sell it, and we do not pass it to advertisers. Reply to any message from us asking to be removed and you will be.

Who else touches it

Our suppliers

  • GitHub Pages serves the website itself and, like any web server, sees the requests your browser makes for pages and images.
  • Cloudflare runs the service that stores saved Plus reviews, and the calculation service used by the ChatGPT app, which stores nothing.
  • OpenAI runs ChatGPT. If you use Tax.cal inside ChatGPT, your conversation is processed by OpenAI under its own terms.
  • Formspree handles early-access sign-ups.
  • Plausible counts page views so we can see which countries people are visiting from.
  • Google Fonts serves the typefaces used on these pages.

We do not run advertising, tracking pixels or session recording. We do count visits — see below.

Counting visits

We measure traffic, not people

We use Plausible to count how many people visit and which pages they land on. We need this to know whether anyone is finding the site at all, and which countries to build for next.

It is deliberately the least invasive option we could find. It sets no cookies, creates no persistent identifier, and cannot follow you to other websites. It records the page you viewed, where you arrived from, and your rough country, device type and browser — then discards your IP address rather than storing it. Nothing it collects can be traced back to you, and we could not single you out in it even if we wanted to.

What it does not see: anything you type. Your salary, your spending and your questionnaire answers are never sent to it. Those stay on your device, exactly as described above.

For the ChatGPT app we count calculations by tool and country from the operational log lines described above, for example "a calculation for India". That count never includes your figures, and we do not use any detail of your taxes as an analytics dimension.

Plausible is an EU company and stores its data in the EU. If you would rather not be counted at all, any browser-level ad or tracker blocker will stop it, and the site works perfectly well without it.

Your rights

If you are in the UK or the EU

You have the right to access a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, restrict how it is used, object to its use, and complain to your data protection regulator.

For a saved review, the access and deletion rights are built into the page itself — opening your link shows you everything we hold, and the delete button removes it. For anything else, including the waiting list, contact us using the details below.
